An apple for the teacher

It’s that time of year when I realise that once again I have left teacher gifts to the last minute. Here’s a quick and easy crochet gift – an apple for the teacher drawstring bag. I put a Terry’s Chocolate Orange in each of mine but you can also fill it with chocolates and lollies.

I used Panda 8 ply acrylic and a 4mm hook.

Apple – with red
Magic ring, ch1
Round 1: 1ch, 10 sc in ring. Do not join
Round 2: 2sc in 1st sc, 1sc in the next. Repeat around. Do not join (15sc)
Round 3: 2sc in the first sc, 1sc in the next 2. Repeat around. Do not join. (20sc)
Round 4: 2sc in the first sc, 1sc in the next 3. Repeat around. Do not join. (25sc)
Round 5: 2sc in the first sc, 1sc in the next 4. Repeat around. Do not join. (30sc)
Round 6: 2sc in the first sc, 1sc in the next 5. Repeat around. Do not join. (35sc)
Round 7: sc around in back loops only. Do not join. (35sc)
Round 8 – 16: sc around in both loops. Do not join between rounds. Slip stitch to beginning sc at end of Round 16.
Round 17: Ch3. Dc in each sc around. Join to top of ch3. Finish off and weave in ends.

Drawstring – with green
Ch 52. Tie off end. Thread through spaces between dc of final round.

Leaves – with green (make 2)
Ch6, sc in 2nd. Ch from hook and in each ch across (5sc)
Ch1, turn. sc, sc, hdc, sc, sc
Ch 1, sc, sc, hdc, sc ,sc. along other side of beginning chain. Join with a slip stitch at the bottom of the leaf.
Sew leaves to apple, attaching either side of drawstrings (be careful nothing to stitch drawstring or you won’t be able to open and close the apple)

Another way of making the drawstring is to crochet the leaf first and instead of finishing off, after the last slip stitch, ch38 then work the next leaf into the final 5 chains. This gives you a drawstring with a leaf on each end.
