DAY 46: World Oceans Day

According to worldoceansday.org 8 million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in our oceans, including millions of plastic bags. I do keep and reuse our plastic bags but today I am going one step further turning my plastic bags into plarn- plastic yarn.

I decided I needed a new plarn fruit bowl.

Step 1: Grab a plastic bag

Step 2: Fold the bag in half

Step 3: Fold the bag in half again

Step 4: Cut off the bottom seam and the handles. Keep these to use to stuff other projects later.

Step 5: Take the folded bag and cut across into small strips about 1.5 – 2cm wide.

Step 6: Your strips should look like this.

Step 7: Unfold your strips

Step 8: You are going to loop the strips together. Lay the strips together as shown here.

Step 9: Loop one strip over the other as shown.

Step 10: Pull loop through.

I used an 8mm crochet hook and crocheted a circle in the round increasing gradually using single crochet. When I reached the size base I wanted, I switched to double crochet in each stitch around. I used 10 plastic bags and my plarn ran out on the very last stitch (can you believe it??). I used 4 white bags to crochet around the top.
